Every Android user on the planet has probably already downloaded and installed the Instagram app (follow me @ funkymonster) that was only available on the iPhone up until a few days ago. It ranked as #1 downloaded app in Google Play with over 1 million downloads in 24 hours.
I have to admit, it’s a pretty great app. I’m not much of a picture taking person, but I’ve realized that the app makes it more fun for me to snap everyday life. It also manages to take better pictures than my default camera and other similar apps. Seems to have anti-blur/shake qualities built in. It almost makes it look like I have talent in photography!
Though I was making myself a bit sick of it from playing with it too much, so I gave it a small rest for a few days. However I was bombarded with links on my Twitter account about a new app that serves as a companion for Instagram, so I go have a look…
Enter Instagrille.
This is a Windows only app that installs into your taskbar and lets you do just about everything, except upload pictures. Not to worry though! Even though the main attraction of uploading and editing pictures isn’t there you can still use this handy app to view your feed, popular pictures, and see your account information. The biggest advantage is that you can now view pictures in a much larger window, like, comment, and make changes to the people you follow. There’s also a nice little feature that shows any new updates, much like Facebook’s interface (shown right).

As a designer I think I’ve just found a new alternative to finding inspiration throughout the day, Pintrest be damned .

My best friend and I have a lot of strange conversations. It’s ok, because it’s a break from the everyday ‘normal’ yakking I do with other people on occasion. Yesterday’s conversation lead to me making him realize that we put value to an animals death depending on the factor of them having fur or not.
My logic was:
Dogs, cats = furry = cute
Bugs, snakes = non-furry = not cute
Fur is considered more valuable in terms of life . A dying dog harbors more value and sympathy than a dying snake.
Think about it.
Isn’t it funny (in irony, not literal) how on TV we see all these animal cruelty commercials and we feel horrible, but if they were to show us people crushing ants we wouldn’t be as impacted? When was the last time you felt bad for killing a bug or a spider? Why don’t we have PETA movements for all the snakes that get killed in deforestation?
It’s because we’re taught from very early on that fur equals safe, lovable, and valuable. If you hate fur, you hate life and all that’s good in it. If you hate slick and smooth? Well, they had it coming.
And chickens? Well, they’re just there.
